About Eureka
Although the exact year is unknown, Eureka's long history begins prior to 1895 in Binghamton, NY, where the company still resides today. Then known as the Eureka Tent & Awning Company, its first wares were canvas products--most notably, Conestoga wagon covers and horse blankets for 19th-century American frontiersmen--as well as American flags, store awnings, and camping tents.

The company increased production of its custom canvas products locally throughout the 1930s and early 1940s. The company even fabricated and erected a series of IBM "tent cities" just outside Binghamton, housing thousands of IBM salesmen during the company's annual stockholders meeting, which had outgrown its previous locale. With the advent of World War II and the increased demand for hospital ward tents, Eureka expanded operations and began shipping tents worldwide. Ultimately, upon the post-war return of the GIs and the resultant housing shortage, Eureka turned its attention to the home front during the 1950s by supplying awnings for the multitude of mobile homes that were purchased.

In 1960, renowned explorer Sir Edmund Hillary used Eureka's new and innovative Draw-Tite tent--with its practical, freestanding external frame--in a Himalayan expedition to Nepal (Hillary had climbed to the summit of Mt. Everest only six years earlier). In 1963, Eureka made history during its own Mt. Everest ascent, with more than 60 of its tents sheltering participants during the first all-American Mt. Everest Expedition, where explorers braved fierce 60-plus mph winds and temperatures reached below -20F.

Eureka introduced its legendary Timberline tent in the 1970s, targeting it to backpackers and families. The first to employ the StormShield design, the lightweight, self-supporting backpacking tent became one of the most popular tents in the industry, with sales reaching over 1 million by its 10-year anniversary. Eureka tents have also traveled as companions on other historic expeditions, including the American Women's Himalayan Expedition to Annapurna I in 1978 and the first Mt. Everest ascents by a Canadian and American woman in 1986 and 1988. In recent years, Eureka designed and donated tents to Eric Simonson and his team. The group took two historic research expeditions to Mt. Everest, this time in a quest for truth regarding the 1924 attempted summit of early English explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine. During the 1999 expedition, the team made history by finding the remains of George Mallory, but the overall mystery remained unsolved. Returning in 2001 to search for more clues, the team found several historical artifacts that are now on display at the Smithsonian.

Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all-purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in. If you're a backpacker, alpine climber, or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to use something designed to handle more adversity.

Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall, and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three-season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproof camping.

For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four-season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.

Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types: freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floorplan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one- and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it with less weight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall, and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three-season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are specifically designed for summer backpacking or other activities. Many premium tents will also feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain fly for enhanced waterproofing.

Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types: freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and tents that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being lighter. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.

Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. Measure from that point down the spine following the curve of your back along the way. To resolve the lowest point of the measurement, find your iliac crests. These are the tops of your hip bones on each side. With your index fingers on the top of your hip bones, point your thumbs back and level. The point between your thumbs is the lowest of your measurement. The length between these two points is your torso length.

And that's it! Now that you have an strict measure of your torso, chip it in stone somewhere near where you keep all your camping gear. It will come in handy if you buy a new pack.

In general, less than 18 inches is a small torso, 18 to 20 inches is a medium torso, and over 20 inches is a large torso.

About Coleman
More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Campsites are available on each side of the picturesque lake or in more secluded areas nearby. The trout in Fourth of July Lake tend to cruise near the shore, if fishing is on your mind. Head up the inlet of the lake to get a look at deer that normally congregate in the large meadow, and keep an eye out for mountain goats on close-by Patterson Peak.
This area is covered with mountain heather and other wildflowers in the summer months.

You can hike from this point into other areas dotted with alpine lakes and spectacular mountain vistas. Washington Lake is just over a mile from Fourth of July Lake. The trail climbs 200 feet or so and then drops a like whole down to the lake. Fishing is easier and often good at Washington Lake. Try to find camping in a location other than the most favorite sites close to the lake outlet.

There are well over 100 alpine lakes scattered throughout the White Cloud Peaks location. Many still lack names. Other named lakes and points of interest include:

Sleeping bag technology has come a long way from the days of cowboy bedrolls. These days, there are a number of high-tech materials and designs available to keep you warm during the coldest outings. Here's a short list of things to keep in mind when you're shopping for a bag:

Buy for Cold
It's a safe bet that on at least one of your adventures, the nighttime temperature will drop unexpectedly. That's why it's smart to buy a bag that's rated for the lowest possible temperature you expect to face on your camping and backpacking trips. For summer trips, a bag rated at +35 degrees or higher will likely do the trick. When you buy a camping light make sure to get extra mantles, fuel, bulbs, and/or batteries, it's not much fun needing a light part in the middle-of-nowhere and not being able to get it when you need it.

Candle lanterns can be lightweight at 3.7 ounces, but you may not want to use them as a camping light as their light yield leaves something to be desired at 1 to 1.5 watts. They're pretty much a candle with a protective sheath to help preclude the flame from blowing out in the wind and keep things a tiny safer by avoiding an open flame. Another drawback... The sheath enclosure also makes it more difficult to roast marshmallows over your lantern. ;-)

I suggest going flameless especially inside your tent. It doesn't take much to start a fire with a high intensity heat source. Falling asleep and tipping your camping light over is all it takes to put your life in serious jeopardy. There are a lot of great battery lanterns, Led lanterns and rechargeable lanterns available. Play it smart.

While great Led lanterns put out a good estimate of light I haven't found one yet that can match the light yield of well-designed flame camping lanterns. If you need a lot of light in a local outdoor area have a look at butane, propane, and gas lanterns. Some of these lanterns crank out up to 235 watts of light! That's more light than most people use to light a room at home. How to Pack Your Backpack For Camping

Size of Pack

As a normal rule of thumb, you can divide pack sizes into what you will need based on the length of the trip and gender. Clearly, some adjustments can be made to both factors here. Commonsense and sense will dictate these adjustments.

Length of Trip We are assuming that most trips will be a minimum of 2 days. With this in mind, look for a pack in the 2400-4800 cubic inch capacity range for trips persisting 2-4 days. For 5 days and longer, look for a larger capacity pack based on the guidelines in the next section
Gender Packs must fit. They also cannot be too heavy. Both of these considerations are somewhat impacted by gender. Having said that, this author knows abundance of women capable of out-carrying most men. The point is here to get what will work for you.
Having said this, for the 5 days and longer range, women can commonly look at packs with a capacity of 4300 cubic inches and greater. Men can look at packs with a capacity of 4800 cubic inches and greater.
Maximum Weight
The normal rule of thumb on maximum weight is 25-30% of your ideal body weight. So, a 150 lb person should be seeing at carrying up to 45 lbs along with the weight of their pack. A 200 lb person can go up to 60 lbs. Many citizen exceed these guidelines for weight, but with some planning they actually would not need to do so.
Weight Distribution
The plan here is to pack you gear in three layers. The bottom layer will be lighter items you will not need passage to through the day of backpacking. This would contain sleeping bag, certain clothing items, etc. The middle layer, near the middle of the back, would contain your heavier items such as camp stoves, fuel, and food. At the top, you should put items that are lighter, and you might need through the day.
Additionally, make sure you pack weight evenly from side to side. Occasionally, some adjustments will need to be made. As you become well-known with your gear, the need to make these adjustments will be lessened.
Attaching Gear to outside of Pack
First, let me urge the reader to not get carried away with this. You will see some backpackers that look like they could not possibly own a single item that would go inside their pack because it must be somewhere on the outside. This looks ridiculous, but more importantly, can originate stability issues as you hike with your pack.
Sharp items that might tear the interior of your pack should go on the outside. This might contain items such as trekking poles. Also, some items like sleeping pads are natural fits to go on the outside. As you attach items, keep in mind that you will likely need to passage items on the interior of the pack through the day.
Organization of Materials to be Packed
This is likely the most foremost part of packing your backpack.
Lay out all materials you think you will bring Start with sleeping bag which will go in the bottom. Place other clothing you will not need in same area. Place "miscellaneous" items with other items of a similar nature in small stuff sacks (color-coded helps) so that you can locate them more easily. Fill pack with such items that fit this kind until you reach level where heavy items go. Pack camp stove, fuel, and food. Some believe fuel and food should not be in same area. As long as fuel is derive I find this not to be a problem. Place items above that may need to be accessed through the day. If using a tent, distribute parts to backpackers who will reside in it. Essentially, there are two possibilities here. Most newer packs will be set up for hydration reservoirs. This is a nice option. If not, use the external pockets on older packs for water canisters. That's what folks have been doing for years, and it will work just fine.
As you continue in your endeavors, you will study what items you can live without. When you are carrying your gear, the motivation to simplify becomes greater. These tips should help you getting started.

I extremely recommend that backpackers work from a camping list as they plan their gear purchases and pack for their trip. There are two reasons for this. The first and most inescapable calculate is that if you forget something important, you can't hop in the car and run to the nearest Wal-Mart to buy a exchange like you can when you're car camping (I currently own 3 propane bottles due to this phenomenon). The second and less inescapable calculate is that it helps you limit what you bring, which is very leading when you're carrying all on your back.

Most backpackers use tents of some type. I have a Coleman Cobra small two-man tent that I use when the weather is really cold (I had dreams of being chased by a Polar Bear jumping from iceburg to iceburg one night when I tried sleeping in my hammock on night then the climatic characteristic was hovering around zero). I've found, however, that when the terrain, the rules, and the conditions allow, I prefer using a hammock. I bring the tarp for shelter over my hammock, and it has served at quick shelter for a group of nine during an intense sudden storm that came up while we were on the trail. Obviously, if you're going to be camping in very rocky terrain, you'll want a free-standing tent. If you're going to be hiking in heavy snows, you'll want a four-season tent. Here's my shelter:
Kelty Noah's Tarp 12 (I considered a 9' tarp, but to me the 9oz difference was worth it for storm protection. It's very roomy for one person. I've also shared my tarp on occasion. There are lots of tie-outs, so I have plentifulness of options for set-up.) 40"x96" polycryo groundcloth (very light and folds very small)
Sleeping
Ultralight fanatics would never be caught dead with anything but the absolute lightest down sleeping bags. More power to them. All of my bags are synthetic. I live in an extremely rainy area, and synthetic bags still provide loft and warmth when wet. Due to one unfortunate incident on a Scout trip, I spent a cold night in a bag after wringing it out and other than being a limited clammy, was fine. Down, on the other hand, loses all loft when it's wet. Granted, there are lots of ways to keep your bag dry, but I'd rather prepare for the worst, so I suffer with a few extra ounces and a slightly bulkier bag.
Homemade hammock (I can't always use it, but it's nice when I can) 3/4 length Thermarest Guidelite (I can use this on the ground or in the hammock for bottom insulation if needed. I also use it for a "chair" on occasion.) Sleeping Bag (I have some and bring the one that's qualified to the weather) Sleepwear (ranges from underwear in warm weather to silk long underwear plus wool socks and a beanie in cold weather)
Pack
Some citizen prefer external frame packs, some prefer internal frame packs. Here are the key differences: an external frame pack is cooler on you back and you have options on how you attach gear to the face of the pack, but it tends to ride a limited additional from your back than an internal; internal frame packs ride very close to your back which authentically reduces load swaying, but they're hotter on your back and there are fewer options on how to carry your gear. I prefer internal frame packs, simply because I haven't found an external frame that doesn't hit the back of my head as I look up. I have a couple of packs, but my current pack is very light, since this is a good place to authentically trim the pounds.

Water
I've heard of groups running out of water on the trail. I'll do all in my power to make sure that doesn't happen to me or a group I'm hiking with.
Depending on the water provide in the area I'm hiking in, I will bring two Nalgenes, a four-liter Platypus water bag, and if needed, two empty one-liter club soda bottles. Note that if you're in bear country and your water bottles have ever held anything other than water (club soda is just carbonated water), they should go into the bear bag at night. Cooking/Eating
There are lots of options for lightweight high-tech stoves that are ready today. I made the alcohol stove after reading an record online, and since it's pretty cool and tends to be a conversation starter (not to mention being very, very lightweight), it's what I use. Obviously if you're going into an area where you have to rely on ready fuels, stick with one of the more coarse white gas stove or even a dual fuel stove that can also use unleaded gas.

Safety
Skimp on your tent, and you get wet. Skimp on your sleeping bag, and you'll be cold. Skimp on your security equipment, and you could die.

Accessories
Some citizen bring less, some bring more. I've found straight through caress that these are the items I use, and also those that I regret if I don't have.
Trekking Poles (they authentically help when you're loaded down with water in rugged terrain and they can be used to pitch the tarp on the ground) Journal + pen + 2 golf pencils (I lost my pen and my backup pencil once. The pencils are very light.) Bear Bag Cord some homemade stuff sacks Camera (I've been bringing a small digital with lithium batteries. The lithium batteries last a Long time.) Food
Please keep your food and trash completely detach from the rest of your pack items. Gallon Ziplocks will work Ok for this. You don't want your pack or gear to smell like food. Bears have exquisite noses!
Two hot meals a day - oatmeal for breakfasts and variety for dinners Cold trail-type food for lunches/snacks. (Make sure you plan for plentifulness of calories or you're authentically start feeling it in the middle of your trek.)
Clothing
I'm not going to list all of the clothing I bring, because it changes significantly season-to-season. However, I think it's leading to list the clothing items I pack (i.e. duplicate items):
One extra wicking t-shirt Two extra wicking underwear Two extra pairs of Smartwool socks (I know I wasn't going to get into clothing specifics, but I have to mention these. I've found the Smartwool Trekker socks to be the best for backpacking. I bring three total pairs so that I always (hopefully) have a dry pair to change into.)
Optional Items to Consider
You may think of other items you want to bring, but please remember that an ounce on your back is a pound on your feet!
Sock liners (I hate them, but some citizen love them. With Smartwool socks, I have no need.) Gaiters (I've never used them, but I'm sure they help keep your socks dry in foul weather.
